What Is Legal Body Armor?

broken image

Body armor is a technological garment that is worn around the torso in order to resist injury in case of a physical attack, or to provide protection against a bullet. Since law enforcing agencies have the responsibility to uphold and enforce the law, many people argue that the wearing of body armor is not actually legal. In fact, some people believe that if law enforcement officials would wear body armor during operations, then criminals who assault police officers would have no reason to resist arrest. However, there are a number of reasons why officers should not have such armor. First, it would allow attackers to fire a high caliber bullet at an officer, thus reducing the officer's ability to protect his or her person. Second, police officers are already well-trained to be capable of taking care of any situation, and having armor would only make their jobs harder. Additionally, some cities have rules prohibiting officers from being armed with guns while on duty.

This argument is problematic on several levels. First, it ignores the fact that police officers are in the line of fire every day. There are going to be times when they will need to take cover at close quarters with a gun, and they do not want to take a hit in the chest with a high-powered bullet either. Second, even if the armor does reduce the chances of injury, it is simply a waste of taxpayer money for these agencies. These agencies have plenty of other needs and the costs involved in purchasing armor piercing clothing and ammunition for training drills and so forth are considerable.

There are ways to get around this problem, however. One of them is to outfit each police officer with a taser, which is similar to an electrical baton, but has a much shorter range. This means that it will have less of an impact on an attacker and will also have a shorter range than most standard police weapons. Another solution is to attach a stun gun to each officer's personal weapon. These devices are considered to be low-lethal, and have been successfully used to incapacitate criminals long enough for the police to get them into custody.

The problem with this is that the same protection afforded law enforcement personnel will be afforded to citizens as well. Yes, the police will have a better chance of hitting a criminal with a high-powered bullet, but they will also likely be protected from a lower powered baton or other personal defense weapon as well. Therefore, this armor is unnecessary. Additionally, if the police choose not to wear body armor while on duty, it is possible that they will be accused of brutality for shooting an unarmed suspect who may simply not follow the rules of the game. As such, it is important for police officers to wear standard issue clothing whenever possible.

Legal body armor is a reasonable request by law enforcement officials. If they want to have a level of protection, they must do what they can to make it happen. Fortunately, there are options available for them to purchase, and they do not need to spend a fortune to achieve it. An officer just needs to ask for it. As such, the next time a cop is involved in a shooting, the first thing he should do is look into purchasing some body armor. Check out our website at legionary.com
